VISA for Britain 

If you are from the European Union or a European Economic Area country, you do not need a visa to enter the UK. If you are from somewhere else and not certain if you need a visa then you should visit www.ukvisas.gov.uk where you will find the latest information. If you do need a visa then the process may take a long time so make your application as soon as possible. If you are uncertain what to do next then we will help you –

British Weather

Our weather can be very changeable. Torquay is said to have the best climate in Britain, more sunshine and generally warmer than everywhere else. However, like most places in the world it does rain here so it is always advisable to bring an umbrella and a waterproof jacket. AT THE SCHOOL

 

Accommodation 

The Welfare and Accommodation Manager is in the main reception office and you should consult her if you need any help or advice regarding your accommodation in Torquay. 

School Services  

The staff in the TIS Reception Office can help you with many things – travel, hotels, visas, medical assistance, cultural advice and most other problems that you might encounter. They are always there and you will find it easy to approach them and ask for advice. If they don’t know the answer, they will help you find it. 

First Aid

We have a First Aid Box in the TIS Reception Office and two of our staff are qualified First-Aiders. 

Fire Drills

During your stay there might be a practise Fire Drill – these are held regularly.  

Lunch

Sandwiches, fruit and home-made cakes are available daily at TIS. Within walking distance of TIS there are pubs, cafés, restaurants and takeaways. Ask other students and at the Reception for recommendations.  

OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL

 

Drinking & Alcohol

It is illegal to buy alcohol if you are under 18 and you may not drink it in a pub. It is illegal to buy alcohol in a pub for someone under 18. It is illegal for a barman or barmaid to sell alcohol to any one under 18. If you look young you may have to prove your age with an identity card or passport. You can be heavily fined for breaking these laws. It is also illegal to drink and drive. Drinking and driving can mean imprisonment. 

Shopping

Most shops are open 09.00 to 17.30 Monday - Saturday. Some open on Sunday. Supermarkets are generally open in the evenings and all day Sunday. 

Banks

Foreign currency and Travellers' Cheques can be exchanged at banks, post offices and travel agencies. There are a lot here. Commission is charged and the rates of exchange vary, so it is best to 'shop around'. If you need to open a bank account whilst you are here then we can help you. Bank Opening hours are normally:

09.30 – 16.30/17.30 Monday - Friday

09.30 – 12.30/15.30 Saturdays  

Travelling around Torquay 

It’s not difficult to get around Torquay and most places are within walking distance. However, there is a good bus service and you can buy a bus pass at the TIS Reception Office which will also entitle you to travel to other parts of the English Riviera. There are plenty of taxis in the town and they can always be found (24 hours) at the bus or railway station. 

Medical Matters

If you are an EU National you will receive free medical treatment under the National Health Service. If you are not from an EU country and are here for less than 6 months you will pay for medical treatment. If you are staying for more than 6 months and register with a doctor, your treatment will be free. Everyone must pay part of the cost of medicines.  

Dental Treatment

If you have any dental treatment in Britain then you will have to pay the full cost. 

Emergencies

If you need an ambulance, call 999. This is free from any telephone. You will be asked which service you require: Fire, Ambulance or Police.

In a real emergency and when the school is closed and you need our help you should call: 07881 710 395. Calling a cellphone can be expensive and we are always ready to help you, BUT PLEASE only call this number if it is absolutely essential!
