TIS Trivia - Did you know.......?
Did you know that TIS once belonged to SAS - the Swedish Airline.
SAS used to have a subsidiary (or daughter company) called Vingresor - a holiday company. And in turn Vingresor had a another daughter company called SIS which was a major player in the language travel market for young students. In 1972 they bought a beautiful villa in Torquay and converted it into offices and a school for mature students and that school grew into TIS. In 1976 Jan Karlsson (Scandinavians will know this former airline god) and the SAS board decided to sell all of SIS to a major competitor known also by its initials.... - I'm sure you can guess! They weren't so interested in the little school called TIS and so we employees clubbed together and bought TIS from EF immediately the transfer took place. It was known then as the first Management Buyout in the language travel industry - I know because I was one of those courageous employees.
So it was Swedes that founded this school of English down here in Devon. Our staff were trained by Swedes and I have to say they were wonderful. They had such high standards and a true belief in looking after the client in every little way - we still follow that doctrine now and we still maintain the red and white colours that SAS / SIS gave us. I have always been very grateful that Jan Karlson decided to sell SIS and that we were able to buy our small part of it.
I am happy to say we are still great friends with some of those former SIS staff, not just in Sweden but around the world.
