Oldway Mansion 
In 1871 this 100 room mansion was bought by Issac Singer, founder of the Singer Sewing Machine Company. He then started to build a huge new mansion. Singer died in 1875 aged 63. When he died he had 22 living children, various wives, both legal and common law!

On the edge of Torquay, this is a beautiful country park and mansion house. A local speciality is the Devon Cream Tea. Delicious!

Dartmoor National Park  
 
Highlight of the week – a walk across Dartmoor with Nick the Dartmoor postman. A fabulous day, a long walk, wonderful stories of Dartmoor. Watch out for the Hound of the Baskervilles – this is where Sherlock Holmes solved the great mystery. Walking boots can be provided. 
On a visit to Dartmouth we go to the Cherub Inn, a truly beautiful old pub

This is the pub where Agatha Christie used to take Sunday lunch after morning service in the church. It's a good place for sitting round the fireside and sing-song round the piano

These prehistoric caves are the oldest recognisable human 
dwelling in Britain and have some of the oldest evidence of man's earliest occupation in Britain

A visit to Totnes on the River Dart 
This beautiful Elizabethan town is full of character and a real artistic centre. It's a great place to try out the famous Devon Cream Tea; scones, strawberry jam and the thickest cream in the world! Mmmm - delicious.

Topsham is a delightful estuary port and birdlife reserve. Exeter is the capital Devon with great shops and a beautiful cathedral.

TIS Students are all ages from 15 to over 80 in 
some cases. 
The above are typical examples of the weekly activities at TIS. The programmes change every week and of course are subject to the weather! All social programme activities are optional. 
Some of the activities are free of charge but others (such as excursions) are charged at cost. We do not make a profit on our Social Programme – it is provided to help you enjoy your stay with us.
