Torquay and the English Riviera

“It’s certainly true that there are many wonderful places to study English but I believe that Torquay on the English Riviera is one of the very best in the world,” says Judith Hands, Owner and Director of Torquay International School. “I’ve travelled to many beautiful and exciting places during my life but each time I come home and look out over the picturesque harbour and across the bay, see the seven hills and the palm trees, I know that I am privileged to live and work in such a lovely area.”

About The English Riviera

Stretching along 35 kilometres of stunning South Devon coastline, the beautiful English Riviera has been a popular British holiday destination for centuries. The sandy beaches, rocky coves, picturesque harbours and a wonderfully mild climate (thanks to the Gulf Stream) help to make this an ideal place to study whether for just one or two weeks or even for a year. Torquay is often called the 'Queen of the English Riviera’ and, in addition to the beautiful scenery, there are many attractions and facilities in the area to entertain all age groups.

Torquay is the birthplace and former home of the crime-writer Agatha Christie, and is steeped in history. From the awe-inspiring caves of Kents Cavern (the most famous Stone Age settlement in Britain), to the influences of the Napoleonic Wars and the arrival of the Victorians, Torquay has grown over 40,000 years to become an internationally famous yachting centre and modern tourist resort.
